What is the B1 test?
Part of the UK ESOL qualifications, it checks intermediate English ability. Speaking is face to face with an examiner; listening has three parts on everyday English.

Drivers and applicants
TfL requires PHV drivers to prove B1 English via a PeopleCert video call. Citizenship applicants need it for ILR and naturalisation, with speaking and listening sections.

Home Office-Approved B1 Speaking & Listening Tests
There are four main Home Office-approved Secure English Language Tests (SELTs) accepted for British Citizenship (Naturalisation) and Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR). Although they all assess English at CEFR Level B1, each test has a slightly different format.
