B1 English Test: Which of the 4 Exams Should You Take?
There isn't one "B1 test." There are four, all approved for the same purpose, and picking the wrong one wastes money and time. Here's how they actually differ.
Why you need this test
If you're applying for Indefinite Leave to Remain or British citizenship, you need to prove your English is at CEFR level B1 or higher — unless you're exempt.
This is separate from the Life in the UK Test. That one checks your knowledge of Britain. This one checks your English.
For citizenship and ILR specifically, you only need to prove speaking and listening. Work and study visas usually need all four skills — reading, writing, speaking, listening — which is a longer, different exam.
The test must be a Secure English Language Test (SELT) from a Home Office-approved provider. A regular IELTS or PTE score from a language school doesn't count — it has to be booked as the specific SELT version.
Results are valid for 2 years. If your qualification has expired but was accepted when you first settled in the UK, you can usually still use it for citizenship without retaking.

All four are approved for both ILR and citizenship. None give you a band score to chase — it's pass or fail against the B1 threshold.
The four tests, one by one
Trinity GESE Grade 5
A 10-minute conversation with a real examiner, face to face. You'll talk about a topic you've prepared, then have a general conversation. Provisional results land the next morning; your certificate follows within about a week. Good if you're comfortable talking to a person and want it over quickly.
IELTS Life Skills B1
Up to 22 minutes, with an examiner and one other test taker at the same time. You'll discuss everyday topics — routines, plans, opinions — partly with the examiner, partly with the other candidate. Straight pass or fail, no band score. Good if talking alongside a peer feels less pressured than one-on-one.
LanguageCert ESOL SELT B1 (Speaking & Listening)
An 11–13 minute online interview with a live interlocutor, taken individually at a test centre. Shortest of the four. Results in about 3 working days. Good if you just want the quickest sitting.
Pearson PTE Home B1
22 minutes, entirely computer-based. You speak into a headset and answer on screen — no human examiner at any point. Scored by AI. Results usually in 2 days. Good if a screen feels less nerve-wracking than a person watching you.

There's no wrong answer among the four — pick based on what makes you less anxious, not which sounds most impressive.

A few practical things worth knowing before you book:
Book directly through the provider's own website — third parties sometimes claim to be official partners when they aren't
The name on your booking must match your ID exactly
You'll usually get a test date within 28 days of booking
Bring original ID, not a copy or a screenshot
Quick answers
Do I need the 4-skills version or the speaking-and-listening version? For citizenship or ILR, speaking and listening only. The 4-skills tests are for work and study visas.
Can I use an old qualification if it's expired? Sometimes. If it was accepted when you first settled in the UK, you can usually still use it for citizenship even past 2 years old.
Does a higher score help my application? No. Citizenship and ILR just need a pass at B1. There's no advantage to scoring higher.
